Child Therapy

Are you Worried About Your Child?

Is your child having difficulty coping with his/her emotions? Does your child worry a lot, get upset easily, or cry or get angry frequently? Is your child having behavior difficulties in school or having difficulties paying attention, getting motivated or completing tasks? Are you feeling frustrated, questioning yourself as a parent and trying to understand why your child is struggling so much?  Or maybe your child has witnessed violence or has been abused. You are feeling that you don't know where to turn for help and healing for your child and yourself, too. These circumstances can affect your whole family and leave you feel emotionally drained.  You may even dread coming home to your child or dread facing these issues.  Some well-intentioned people may say your child is going through a phase or will recover, but you are beginning to wonder if something deeper is going on or if you should be doing more to help your child. These are some of the challenges I have worked with by providing education, relief, empowering solutions and support.

Child therapy can be very helpful and provide almost immediate relief for both you and your child. I will work with your family to identify what is going on and provide you with practical treatment options. I will assess your child's development and help you understand this. I will also provide you with concrete tools to help you feel more confident and improve your family environment. Many times, I will use age appropriate play techniques to engage your child and teach them valuable skills about managing feelings, coping with stress, solving problems and getting along with others. Feel free to speak to me about any of your concerns or questions.  In addition to my clinical experience, I offer you the wisdom of raising my own five well-adjusted, productive children and of working in the school system for over 10 years. Don't worry I've seen it all or I've been there and experienced it myself.  See FAQ's about child therapy here. Also, find some helpful videos below for you and your child.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What if something is really wrong with my child?

The fear that something may be really wrong is a common fear.  However, it is reassuring to know that what is really going on with your child, is not as bad as you think. And, until you know what is truly going on, you will likely be consumed with worry, which only makes matters worse. Getting help now will provide relief and prevent problems from getting worse and becoming entrenched patterns. Most problems, if addressed early, will get better. Remember, small child, small problems: big child, big problems!  I will provide you with the education and guidance you need to help you make informed decisions and empower you to help your child.

2. How much time does it take, and how much does it cost?

Therapy does require an investment of time and money, but this is an investment that will reap benefits for years to come for you, your family, and your child. Intense and negative feelings will negatively impact how your child interacts with you and other family members creating conflict and unhappiness, even marital strife.  Behavior and performance issues at school can be very stressful and take you away from your own work and other responsibilities. Isn't your child and your family worth the investment of restoring harmony at home and school and improving the way your child and you feel? This is priceless.  Most therapy can be completed within 3-6 months. However, where there are complicating factors or trauma involved, therapy can take up to a year with follow-up visits required at future developmental phases/stages.  I accept most insurance benefits including Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Medicare, United Healthcare etc. and will work with you to find the most affordable option for you. For a complete listing of insurance plans I accept, click here.   Most co-payments range from $20- $30, but plans do vary, the rest is billed to insurance.  Some educational and others services are not billable to insurance. I usually will bill by the hour for these services with an initial retainer agreement. Call or email now to schedule a 15 minute consultation 815-313-4161 or gwenlcsw@gmail.com
